The Oklahoma City 89ers were established in 1962 as an expansion team and an affiliate of the Houston Colt 45's in the now-defunct American Association minor leagues. Ironically, the team was largely staffed by what was left of the Houston Buffaloes after the Colt 45's pushed them out of Houston.
The franchise name was a nod to the 1889 land rush that opened Oklahoma to settlement. Over 35 seasons the 89ers captured four pennants before rebranding as the Oklahoma RedHawks in 1998.
