Named for the western wind and a famous train, the Zephyrs were the relocated Denver Bears/Zephyrs franchise — moved to New Orleans after the 1992 season when the Colorado Rockies arrived in Denver. The franchise went on to win two AAA Pacific Coast League championships in the minor leagues.
Some New Orleans fans found the name unusual until reminded that the Zephyr roller coaster at the local Pontchartrain Beach amusement park had been a city institution for decades. The franchise rebranded as the Baby Cakes in 2017 before relocating to Wichita in 2020.
