Following the departure of the Indianapolis Checkers from the market, the Indianapolis Ice were established in 1988 as an expansion team in the International Hockey League (IHL). In 1999, the team joined the Central Hockey League (CHL) for five seasons, before relocating to Kansas, where they became the Topeka Tarantulas.
