The Birmingham Americans played the 1974 inaugural season of the WFL at Legion Field, capturing World Bowl I by defeating the Florida Blazers 22–21 in the first championship game of the modern challenger-league era. The Americans went 15–5 across the regular season and three playoff games under head coach Jack Gotta.

Despite winning the inaugural title, the franchise was unable to meet its financial obligations and was rebranded as the Birmingham Vulcans for the 1975 season. The Americans remain the only champions of the original WFL — both the Vulcans (1975) and the league itself folded before another title could be awarded.
