The World League of American Football launched in 1991 as a transatlantic spring league backed by the NFL, fielding ten teams across the United States, Canada, and Europe. The WLAF proved far more popular in Europe than in North America, and the NFL suspended the league's U.S. and Canadian operations after the 1992 season.
The league returned in 1995 as a six-team, Europe-only competition, renamed NFL Europe in 1997 and NFL Europa for its final 2007 season. Across both eras the league played fifteen World Bowls and served as a developmental pipeline for the NFL, sending hundreds of players into the American game before folding after Hamburg's 2007 World Bowl XV title.
