Professional football arrived in the Bay Area in 1946 when San Francisco joined the All-America Football Conference as a charter member, playing at Kezar Stadium. The club was one of the league's strongest through its four seasons, reaching the AAFC championship game and building one of the most devoted fan bases in the country.
When the AAFC merged with the NFL in 1950, San Francisco was one of only three franchises, alongside Cleveland and Baltimore, admitted into the established league — bringing major professional football to the West Coast for good.
