The Chicago Cougars were one of twelve founding WHA franchises, playing three seasons at the International Amphitheatre in a city already firmly identified with its top-tier hockey team. Owners Walter Flynn, Jordon Kaiser and Larry Lamarca built a roster around center Ralph Backstrom and goaltender Cam Newton.
The Cougars' high point came in 1973–74, when they reached the Avco World Trophy finals before falling to the Houston Aeros. Unable to out-draw the established market, the club folded after the 1974–75 season, one of the WHA's shorter-lived original franchises.
