When the expansion Arizona Diamondbacks joined the majors in 1998, the old Tucson Toros were replaced with the Sidewinders — a AAA Pacific Coast League affiliate of the new Phoenix-based team. The Sidewinders captured a minor leagues championship in 2006, but attendance remained low throughout most of the franchise's decade-long run.
After the 2008 season the team relocated to Reno, Nevada and rebranded as the Aces. Notable Sidewinders alumni included Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, Matt Williams, Reggie Sanders, and Adam Dunn — a rotation of Diamondbacks stars who passed through Tucson on rehab assignments or call-ups.
