Now known as the Orix Buffaloes, this Japanese franchise originated in 1936 as the Hankyu Club, becoming the Hankyu Braves and then briefly the Orix Braves before relocating to Kobe in 1991 and rebranding as the Orix BlueWave. The change was jarring for longtime fans, but the BlueWave era produced some of the most exciting baseball of the 1990s in international baseball.

The roster brought star talent to Kobe including a young Ichiro Suzuki, So Taguchi, Troy Neel, Takahito Nomura, and Shigetoshi Hasegawa. The BlueWave captured the Japan Series championship in 1996 — a poignant title coming the year after the devastating Great Hanshin earthquake. The franchise rebranded again as the Orix Buffaloes in 2005.
