The New Orleans Brass brought top-level minor league hockey to the Crescent City for five seasons, playing first at the Municipal Auditorium and later the New Orleans Arena. The Brass were one of several Sun Belt expansion franchises that grew the Southern pro hockey scene in the late 1990s, leaning into a jazz-and-Mardi-Gras identity that fit the New Orleans market.
The franchise's gold, purple and green colors and brass-instrument logo made it one of the most visually distinctive minor league hockey brands of its era. The Brass played their final season in 2001–02 before folding ahead of an arena conflict, as the New Orleans Arena was needed for the NBA's incoming Hornets.
