The Broome Dusters were established in 1973 as charter members of the North American Hockey League. Their logo — a cartoon caveman leaning on a hockey stick — was drawn by a local artist and became one of the most recognizable marks in the league. The team was a success at the gate and on the ice, going 45–20 and winning the Lockhart Cup in 1976 while regularly selling out the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. When the league folded after 1977, Binghamton kept its hockey — an established franchise relocated into the same building and carried on as the Binghamton Dusters.
