Founded as the New England Whalers in the World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1972 and relocating to Hartford in 1974, the franchise joined the top tier of North American professional hockey in the 1979 merger. The team built its identity around Hall of Famer Ron Francis before relocating to North Carolina in 1997.
