The New England Whalers were one of the twelve founding franchises of the World Hockey Association (WHA) and the first team to win the Avco World Trophy, capturing the league's inaugural 1972–73 championship behind the playmaking of player-coach Jack Kelley and the goaltending of Al Smith. Originally based at Boston Garden, the Whalers relocated to Hartford in 1975 after a brief stop in Springfield, anchoring at the Hartford Civic Center and giving Connecticut its first major-league professional sports team.

Across seven WHA seasons the Whalers built one of the league's most stable rosters, with stars like Gordie Howe (joining the franchise in 1977 and reuniting with his sons Mark and Marty), Dave Keon, Rick Ley, and Ron Plumb. When the WHA dissolved in 1979, the Whalers were one of four franchises absorbed into the major professional hockey league, where they continued play as the Hartford Whalers.

  • To order a fully blank jersey, check the "Leave blank" box. Blank jerseys still require full production time — we don't keep them in stock.

  • Changes can only be made within 48 hours of purchase. After 48 hours, the order has entered production and we can't modify it.
  • Cancellations after 48 hours are subject to a 20% restocking fee.

Construction options

Many jerseys offer choices like application method (replica/printed vs sewn tackle twill), sleeve length, or add-on patches. The available options appear on the customization screen as you go through it.

Custom measurements

We can produce jerseys in custom measurements including women's and youth sizes. We can also modify other details on the jerseys shown on the site. For these requests, email custom@royalretros.com before ordering.

Blank-jersey exchanges

Custom jerseys ordered blank (no name or number) can be exchanged for another size or for store credit. Custom jerseys with a name or number printed/sewn are final sale.

Production timeframe

Custom jerseys are made-to-order and ship in 3-7 weeks depending on construction style. The exact lead time for the style you choose is shown on the Decoration Type screen during customization.

Expedited shipping

Choosing an expedited shipping method does not speed up production, it only affects how we ship the order once it's been made. If you need your jersey by a specific date, contact us before ordering.

Standard shipping starts at $5.99. Free Economy shipping on US orders $125+. International shipping available to most countries.
