The Virginia Squires were the result of the Washington Caps moving to Virginia for the 1970 season. The franchise had started in 1967 as the Oakland Oaks, charter members of the ABA. Rick Barry was the star in Washington and famously appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in a Squires uniform — but his contract was traded before he ever played a game for Virginia.

Even without Barry, the Squires fielded three Hall of Fame players: Julius Erving (#32), George Gervin (#21 & 44), and Charlie Scott (#33). The Squires were unique as a state-wide franchise, splitting home games among Norfolk, Hampton, Richmond, and Roanoke. The team struggled financially and after Erving's contract was sold to the New York Nets in 1973 and Gervin's to the San Antonio Spurs in 1974, Virginia eventually folded in 1976 just ahead of the merger with the established league.
