After the 1968 ABA champion Pittsburgh Pipers spent a year in Minnesota and returned home, the franchise was renamed the Pittsburgh Condors for 1970–72. Fan support never recovered — the city felt abandoned after the brief Minneapolis stint — and the Condors folded after the 1971–72 season.

In its short total history, the Pipers/Condors franchise featured two Hall of Fame coaches in Vern Mikkelsen and Buddy Jeannette. Notable players included Connie Hawkins (Hall of Fame), John Brisker, George Thompson, and Mike Lewis.
