The Los Angeles Express played all three seasons of the original United States Football League (USFL) and produced two future Pro Football Hall of Famers. After signing Steve Young to a record $40 million contract in 1984 — the richest deal in pro football at the time — the Express built around the future Hall of Fame quarterback with NFL veterans Sid Gillman and John Hadl on the coaching staff. Protecting Young at left tackle was Gary Zimmerman, the Express's 1984 territorial draft pick, who would go on to a 12-year NFL career with the Vikings and Broncos and earn his own Pro Football Hall of Fame induction in 2008. Los Angeles went 8–10 in 1983, surged to 10–8 in 1984, and made a triple-overtime playoff loss to the Michigan Panthers — the longest game in pro football history at the time — one of the league's signature moments. Financial collapse hit the franchise in 1985, and Young's contract was eventually voided when the league folded, but the Express's tenure launched two Hall of Fame NFL careers and cemented LA's place in original USFL lore.
