The Chicago Blitz were one of the original United States Football League (USFL)'s most ambitious franchises — and one of the most chaotic. Owned by Dr. Ted Diethrich and coached in 1983 by NFL legend George Allen, the Blitz assembled a roster of NFL veterans (including quarterback Greg Landry and running back Tim Spencer) and went 12–6 in their inaugural season, advancing to the divisional round before falling to the Philadelphia Stars. Then came one of the strangest transactions in pro football history: Diethrich, who also bought the Arizona Wranglers, swapped the entire rosters of his two franchises before 1984. The post-trade 1984 Blitz collapsed to a 5–13 finish at Soldier Field. Chicago folded after the 1984 season and never played again, but the original Blitz roster's 1983 run remains one of the most respected single seasons in original spring football.
