The Washington Commandos were one of the four charter franchises of the AFL in 1987, playing home games at the Capital Centre in suburban Maryland. The Commandos played three seasons in the DC market before folding after 1989, making them one of the league's earliest expansion casualties.
Despite a short run, the Commandos were part of the league's founding generation and helped establish arena football in the mid-Atlantic. The DC market would not host another AFL franchise until later expansion teams entered the league in subsequent decades.
