The Portland Steel played one season in the AFL in 2016 at the Moda Center. The Steel were the renamed continuation of the 2014–2015 Portland Thunder franchise, keeping the same Portland AFL team alive for one final season under new branding.

The franchise folded after 2016 as the AFL's revival era continued to lose teams. The Steel represent Portland's final arena football chapter and the closing of one of the AFL's most prominent late-era Pacific Northwest experiments.
