The original Houston Gamblers introduced the high-flying Run-and-Shoot offense, engineered by coordinator Mouse Davis under head coach Jack Pardee. With future Hall of Famer Jim Kelly at quarterback throwing to Richard Johnson, Ricky Sanders, and Gerald McNeil — the "Mouseketeers" — the Gamblers averaged 33 points a game in 1984 and went 13–5. Kelly's 5,219 passing yards and 44 touchdowns that season were the highest single-season total in pro football history at the time. Houston returned to the playoffs in 1985 before a planned merger with the New Jersey Generals never took the field, and the Gamblers' Run-and-Shoot influence reshaped passing offenses across college and pro football.

The name was revived for the USFL's 2022–2023 seasons as a traveling team hosted in Birmingham and Memphis, before merging into a new Houston-based UFL franchise in 2024.
