The original Breakers, coached throughout by Dick Coury, played in three different cities across the USFL's three seasons — Boston (11–7 in 1983, led by quarterback Johnnie Walton), New Orleans (8–10 in 1984), and Portland (6–12 in 1985) — never finding stable footing despite consistently competitive rosters.

The New Orleans Breakers name returned for the revived USFL in 2022, going 6–4 under head coach Larry Fedora before missing the playoffs in 2023. Though the modern Breakers played their home games in Birmingham and Detroit rather than New Orleans, the franchise did not continue when the USFL and XFL merged to form the UFL in 2024.
