The original Birmingham Stallions played all three seasons of the USFL at Legion Field and reached the playoffs every year. Coached by Rollie Dotsch and quarterbacked by Cliff Stoudt, with 1,000-yard rushers Joe Cribbs and Mike Rozier, they went 9–9, 14–4 and 13–5, led the league in attendance, and fell to the Baltimore Stars in the 1985 semifinals. They even drafted Jerry Rice, and Chuck Clanton set a pro football record with 16 interceptions in the final season.

The name returned in 2022 when the revived USFL placed a team at Protective Stadium. Coached by Skip Holtz and led by quarterback Alex McGough and running back Bo Scarbrough, the new Stallions won the 2022 and 2023 USFL titles and the 2024 UFL title — the first dynasty of modern spring football — before the franchise left Birmingham after the 2026 season.
