The Metros joined the North American Soccer League in 1971, the city's second try at the league after the Toronto Falcons folded following a single 1968 season. Toronto finished atop the Northern Division in its early years but lost to eventual champion Philadelphia in the 1973 semifinals, and the club stayed financially stressed under its original ownership throughout its run.

In 1975, Toronto Croatia purchased half the club for $250,000 and the team was renamed Toronto Metros-Croatia — a separate chapter that went on to win the 1976 championship. This is the original Metros era, before that rebrand.
