The Spirits of St Louis played two ABA seasons starting in 1974. The franchise had started as the Houston Mavericks in 1967 before becoming the Carolina Cougars in 1969. Hall of Famer Rod Thorn served as head coach for one season, and a young Bob Costas was the club's play-by-play announcer.

A strong first season behind Moses Malone, Maurice Lucas and Marvin “Bad News” Barnes gave way to a rough second year that rarely drew crowds of even 1,000. Left out of the 1976 NBA merger, the owners turned down a $3 million buyout and instead negotiated a cut of the merged teams' TV revenue — a deal that paid out for nearly four decades until a final buyout in 2014. Other notable Spirits included Ron Boone and Don Chaney.
