The Atoms joined the North American Soccer League as an expansion club in 1973 and won the Eastern Division, beat the Toronto Metros 3–0 in the semifinals, and defeated the Dallas Tornado 2–0 in the championship match — the first expansion team in league history to win a title in its debut year.

Coach Al Miller was named Coach of the Year, and goalkeeper Bob Rigby became the first soccer player to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The Atoms led the league in attendance that season before folding in 1976, their 1973 title still the last outdoor professional soccer championship won by a Philadelphia team.
