The Memphis Rogues played three NASL seasons from 1978 to 1980 out of Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, building an identity around an elephant mascot. The club mixed imported and homegrown talent and made a run to the championship series of the league's experimental winter indoor season before falling in the final. After the 1980 season the franchise was sold and relocated north.
