Founded by Ed Tepper and Earl Foreman, the Major Indoor Soccer League debuted in December 1978 with six teams and popularized 6-a-side soccer played on a field sized to fit hockey arenas. Over 14 seasons the league fielded 24 franchises under 31 different team names, from the Buffalo Stallions and Pittsburgh Spirit to the Cleveland Force and Chicago Horizons.

The San Diego Sockers won eight championships, the most of any MISL franchise, while the Baltimore Blast — originally the Houston Summit — was the only club to play all 14 seasons. Falling attendance and a wave of team folds ended the league after the 1991–92 season.
