The Flint Generals played sixteen seasons of minor league hockey after arriving as an expansion club in 1969, turning the IMA Sports Arena into one of the loudest buildings in the sport. In the spring of 1984 the Generals swept the Toledo Goaldiggers in a best-of-seven final to win the Turner Cup — the franchise's first and only championship.

A dispute with the arena over weekend playing dates pushed ownership to relocate the franchise to Saginaw in July 1985, barely a year after the title. The Generals name was later revived in Flint by other clubs, but the 1969–1985 era remains the high-water mark of the city's hockey history.
