The Detroit Wheels were charter members of the World Football League in 1974, never able to secure a venue in Detroit proper and playing instead at Rynearson Stadium on the Eastern Michigan University campus in Ypsilanti. Going 1–13, the Wheels folded after just 14 games due to severe financial mismanagement — players went unpaid and the team owned no equipment.

It was the WFL's most prominent in-season collapse, and the Wheels did not return for 1975.
