The Cleveland Crusaders were one of twelve founding franchises of the World Hockey Association, owned by Cleveland trial lawyer Nick Mileti, who also owned the NBA's Cavaliers and, eventually, the Indians. The Crusaders played their first two seasons at the aging Cleveland Arena before moving into the new Richfield Coliseum in 1974.

The team fielded competitive rosters across all four seasons, anchored by goaltender Gerry Cheevers and defenseman Paul Shmyr, and were among the WHA's strongest gate attractions in the mid-1970s. Financial pressure and ownership churn led to the franchise's 1976 sale and relocation as the second incarnation of the Minnesota Fighting Saints.
