The California Golden Seals trace their roots to the San Francisco Seals, back-to-back champions of the pro Western Hockey League in 1963 and 1964. When the league expanded from six to twelve teams in 1967, the Seals joined as the Oakland Seals, playing all nine of their seasons at the Oakland Coliseum Arena.

Oakland A's owner Charlie Finley bought the team in 1970, renaming it the California Golden Seals and switching to green and gold to match his baseball club, complete with a signature gimmick of white skates. Finley sold the team back to the league in 1974, and new owners George and Gordon Gund relocated the franchise to Cleveland in 1976, where it became the Cleveland Barons. The Seals made the playoffs only twice in nine seasons, but their offbeat style and Bay Area following made them one of the era's most memorable expansion clubs.
