The Cowboys were the relocated Vancouver Blazers, moved east for the 1975–76 season and joining the World Hockey Association at the Stampede Corral. Anchored by Andre Lacroix, Don Tannahill, and goalie Don McLeod, the club drew some of the WHA's strongest per-capita crowds and made the playoffs in both of its Calgary seasons.
Financial struggles folded the franchise after 1976–77. The Cowboys' Western-themed jersey, built around a rearing-cowboy logo, remains one of the most-collected pieces of obscure 1970s hockey apparel.
