The Dusters were charter members of the North American Hockey League in 1973, built around a distinctive cartoon-caveman logo in brown and gold. The hockey caught up to the branding in 1975–76: Broome went 45–20 and beat the Beauce Jaros in the final to take the Lockhart Cup, regularly selling out the Veterans Memorial Arena.

The league folded after 1976–77, but hockey in Binghamton didn't — an owner bought an established franchise, moved it into the same building for 1977–78, and kept the Dusters name going for another three seasons.
