The Birmingham Americans played the WFL's inaugural 1974 season at Legion Field, capturing World Bowl I with a 22–21 win over the Florida Blazers — the first championship of the modern challenger-league era. Coached by Jack Gotta, the Americans went 15–5 across the regular season and three playoff games.

Financial trouble followed the title, and the franchise was rebranded as the Birmingham Vulcans for 1975. The Americans remain the WFL's only champion — both the Vulcans and the league folded before another title could be awarded.
