The Billings Bighorns brought major junior hockey to Montana in 1977, when the Western Hockey League's Calgary Centennials relocated to Billings and moved into MetraPark Arena. In their debut season the Bighorns became the first American-based club to reach a WHL league final.

The franchise's five-year stay in Billings ended in 1982, when ownership moved the team to Nanaimo, British Columbia, where it continued play as the Nanaimo Islanders.
