The Pilots existed for exactly one season, one of the shortest-lived franchises in major league history. Slated to debut in 1971, the team started two years early after Missouri Senator Stuart Symington insisted the new Kansas City Royals take the field in 1969, forcing Seattle to open too. Sick's Stadium, a minor-league park hastily expanded for the majors, proved barely adequate, and the team finished last in both the standings and attendance.

Unable to secure a new stadium, ownership declared bankruptcy in 1970, and the franchise was sold and relocated to Milwaukee days before the next opening day. The Pilots are best remembered as the subject of Jim Bouton's Ball Four, a diary of the 1969 season that scandalized baseball on publication in 1970. Notable Pilots included Bouton, Lou Piniella (spring training only), and Tommy Harper.
