The Clippers were one of ten charter clubs in the 1967 National Professional Soccer League, which merged with the rival United Soccer Association the next year to form the North American Soccer League. Oakland topped the regular-season standings in 1967, then beat Baltimore in a two-leg final to win the league title.

With the leagues merged in 1968, five Clippers made that season's postseason Best XI, including goalkeeper Mirko Stojanovic. With no other West Coast clubs committed for 1969, Oakland played a farewell schedule of exhibitions instead of competing in a depleted league, and the franchise dissolved that June.
