The New York Titans were one of the original American Football League franchises in 1960. Plans to play at a new Shea Stadium fell through when construction was delayed for years, leaving the Titans at the run-down Polo Grounds, where they struggled to draw fans.

The club declared bankruptcy and was sold after just three seasons. Hall of Famer Don Maynard anchored the roster alongside Larry Grantham and Bill Mathis.
