Owned by RKO General and Wall Street investor Peter Elser, the Generals were a charter entry in the 1967 National Professional Soccer League, playing out of Yankee Stadium and finishing third in a five-team Eastern Division. When that league merged with the United Soccer Association to form the North American Soccer League for 1968, the original plan called for combining New York's two clubs, the Generals and the Skyliners, into one franchise.

RKO General pulled its backing in January 1968, but Elser pressed on with new partners. The team improved to 12-8-12 but missed the playoffs and folded for good at season's end.
