The Dayton Gems were one of the great International Hockey League franchises of the 1960s and '70s, capturing three Turner Cup championships during a 16-season run at Hara Arena. Back-to-back titles in 1968–69 and 1969–70 made them one of the league's first true dynasties, and a third followed in 1975–76 against a deeper IHL field.

The Gems drew strong crowds at Hara Arena for most of their existence and produced a steady pipeline of players who moved on to higher leagues. The franchise folded after the 1979–80 season, though the Gems name was later revived for other Dayton hockey ventures.
