The Bullets began as the Chicago Packers in 1961, the NBA's first expansion team, briefly became the Chicago Zephyrs, then moved to Baltimore and took the Bullets name in 1963. A 1973 move down the road made them the Capital Bullets for one season before the club settled on Washington.

The Washington Bullets won the 1978 NBA championship, beating the Seattle SuperSonics in a seven-game Finals behind Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes, and Bob Dandridge under coach Dick Motta. The franchise dropped the Bullets nickname in 1997 in favor of Wizards.
