The Baltimore Clippers brought top-level minor league hockey back to the city in 1962, when the newly built Baltimore Civic Center anchored an expansion franchise that served mainly as the New York Rangers' development affiliate. Coached by a young Scotty Bowman, the Clippers won the Calder Cup in 1966–67 and added three division titles through the mid-1970s.

The franchise was abruptly disbanded in January 1975, then revived two months later as a new expansion club. The Clippers spent their final season, 1976–77, in the Southern Hockey League before folding for good in January 1977, closing out fifteen years of pro hockey at the Civic Center.
