The Winnipeg Warriors brought professional hockey back to Winnipeg in 1955 after a 27-year absence, joining the Western Hockey League as the first tenant of the new Winnipeg Arena. Owned by the Perrin family, the club enjoyed an immediate run of success: in its 1955–56 debut season, Winnipeg won the WHL's prairie division, swept the playoffs for the President's Cup, then beat the Montreal Royals for the Edinburgh Cup as Canadian minor professional champions.

The Warriors' marquee player was Winnipeg native Bill Mosienko, who returned home to launch the franchise after a long major-league career. Rising travel costs to opponents in Alberta, British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest, combined with arena rent disputes, wore the franchise down, and owner Jack Perrin requested a league leave of absence after the 1960–61 season. The Warriors never returned.
