The Steelheads were owned by Harlem Globetrotters founder Abe Saperstein, who moved most of his Globetrotters baseball players to Seattle to compete in the West Coast Negro League. Jesse Owens often traveled with the club, racing people and horses as between-innings entertainment.

The team had planned to also play home games in other Washington cities before the league folded after its lone season, after which the players returned to barnstorming as the Harlem Globetrotters baseball team. Notable players included Herb Simpson, Zell Miles, Sherwood "Woody" Brewer, and Everett "Ziggy" Marcel.
