The Stars were the rebranded continuation of the St. Louis Giants. After the Giants played a seven-game exhibition series against the crosstown Cardinals in 1921, new ownership took over, renamed the team the Stars for 1922, and moved into newly built Stars Park as a charter member of the first Negro National League.

With multiple Hall of Famers on the roster, the Stars won three championships in the league's final four years before it folded. Hall of Fame players included Oscar Charleston, Cool Papa Bell, Mule Suttles, and Willie Wells.
