The Memphis Red Sox started at the minor-league level but soon began playing major-league-level competition, moving into the Negro National League full-time in 1924. As one of the few clubs to own its own stadium, the team used the extra revenue to recruit top talent and built a winning club through the 1930s, capped by the 1938 NAL championship.

World War II cost the Red Sox multiple players to military service, and the club was never competitive again. Notable players included Hall of Famers Norman "Turkey" Stearnes and Bill Foster, along with Charley Pride, Dan Bankhead, and Cornelius Robinson.
