Founded in Homestead, Pennsylvania as a semi-pro team of steelworkers, the Grays outgrew their small town and split time between Pittsburgh and Washington, DC to accommodate the crowds they drew. Across fifty years they were one of the most popular and successful clubs in the Negro Leagues.

Powered by all-time greats Cool Papa Bell and Josh Gibson, the Grays won 11 league titles and three Negro World Series. Hall of Fame players included Cool Papa Bell, Ray Brown, Oscar Charleston, Martín Dihigo, Bill Foster, Josh Gibson, Judy Johnson, Buck Leonard, Willie Wells, Smokey Joe Williams, Jud Wilson, and Cum Posey, who played, managed, and owned the club.
