Widely regarded as one of the greatest teams of the Negro Leagues, the Black Barons were named after the still-active Birmingham Barons, with whom they shared Rickwood Field. Originally a minor-league club, the team moved up to the major-league level and began drawing larger crowds than their white counterparts, along with national media attention.
Notable players included Willie Mays, Satchel Paige, Mule Suttles, and Willie Wells.
