Originally the Atlanta Cubs, the club took its lasting name from fans who called them the Black Crackers, after the white Atlanta Crackers team they shared a stadium with. The name became official the following season.

After years at the minor league level, the club earned a shot at the major-league Negro American League and reached the championship series, which was canceled amid controversy — the team never played in Atlanta again. Notable players included Nat Peeples, Roy Welmaker, Donald Reeves, Felix Evans and James "Red" Moore.
