From the beginning, the Buckeyes were clearly one of the best teams of their time but weren't without their challenges. The team split home games between Cincinnati and Cleveland in their first season. A car accident on the way to a game took the lives of two players and severely injured three others. The Buckeyes still played out the season, but lost every game the rest of the year. The team bounced back the following seasons and went on to win two Negro American League titles, including a 1947 Negro World Series championship. IN 1949, they played one season as the Louisville Buckeyes before returning to Cleveland for their final campaign.Â
